The crash took place in Hampden County in West Springfield around 10:45 p.m., Saturday, April 23 on Route 5.

The driver lost control of the motorcycle on Route 5 between the Memorial and North End bridges, said Sgt. Joseph LaFrance, of the West Springfield Police.

Arriving officers started CPR and other life-saving measures until the driver could be transported to Baystate Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead, LaFrance said.

The northbound lane of Route 5 was shut down for several hours as the West Springfield Accident Reconstruction Team processed the scene.

"It appears that speed was a factor in this accident," LaFrance said.

At this time, the victim's identity is not being released.
